Privacy Policy

1. Who we are
Weather Studio operates Weather Studio and is the "controller" of the personal data described here under the UK General Data Protection Regulation (UK GDPR) and the Data Protection Act 2018. Contact: [email protected].
2. What we collect and why
Your location
If you press "My location" or allow location access, your browser sends your coordinates to our server. We pass them to weather and place-name services to show your forecast and to name the place. We do not build a profile of you and we do not store your coordinates against your identity. To speed things up we keep short-lived cached lookups for approximate (rounded) coordinates; they are not linked to a person.
Your approximate location from your IP address
If you do not allow precise location, we use your IP address to estimate the nearest town. Your IP address is sent to a third-party IP-location service for this (see section 3). You can avoid this by searching for a place instead.
Searches and places you open
Text you type into the search box is sent through our server to a place-search service. Location links (like @London-UK) contain only the place name.
Anonymous usage statistics
We measure how the Service is used (for example which places are viewed, which features are used, the type of device and browser, the visitor's language, and the website they came from) so we can improve it. This is done with our own software, without cookies and without storing your IP address: a short anonymous code that changes every day is used only to count unique visitors, and cannot be reversed to identify you. We do not record what you type into the search box. If your browser sends a Do Not Track or Global Privacy Control signal, we do not count your visit. We also keep a log of how fast our servers respond to each request, and system health figures, which contain no personal data.
Saved and recent locations and preferences
Your recent places, saved places, units, update interval and outlook length are stored only in your own browser (local storage), and only if you agree to "Preferences" in the cookie popup. We do not receive or store them on our servers.
Technical data
Like every website, our web server and hosting provider may log technical information such as your IP address, browser type, pages requested and time. We use this to keep the Service secure and working. Our own software also keeps a short record (up to 24 hours) of failed administrator login attempts, including the IP address, to block abuse.
Administrator accounts
For people who manage the site: username, email address, a securely hashed password, last login time and records of settings changes.
3. Third parties that receive data
When you use the Service, your browser or our server contacts these services. They receive at least your IP address, and some receive coordinates or search text:
- Open-Meteo (open-meteo.com) - forecasts, air quality and place search (coordinates and search text, via our server).
- MET Norway (met.no) - backup forecasts (coordinates, via our server).
- Met Office - UK forecasts, if enabled (coordinates, via our server).
- BigDataCloud / OpenStreetMap Nominatim - naming a place from coordinates (via our server).
- ipwho.is / ipapi.co - estimating location from an IP address (your IP address, via our server).
- USGS and the US National Weather Service - earthquakes and US alerts (via our server).
- RainViewer, OpenStreetMap / OpenTopoMap and NASA GIBS - map tiles and radar (your browser connects directly, so they see your IP address).
- Blitzortung.org - live lightning strikes (your browser connects directly to their network).
- Windy.com - the interactive wind map. It loads only after you allow third-party content and may set its own cookies; see Windy's privacy policy.
These services have their own privacy policies. Some are located outside the UK and the European Economic Area; where that happens, we rely on the safeguards those providers offer.
4. Legal bases
- Legitimate interests - running, securing and improving the Service (including anonymous usage statistics), and showing the weather for the place you ask for.
- Consent - remembering your preferences in your browser and loading third-party embedded content. You can withdraw consent at any time using "Cookie settings" at the bottom of every page.
- Legal obligation - where we are required by law.
5. How long we keep data
- Cached forecasts and place lookups: from a few minutes up to 30 days.
- Failed login records: up to 24 hours.
- Server logs: as set by our hosting provider (typically up to 12 months).
- Preferences in your browser: until you clear them or withdraw consent.
- Administrator account data: while the account exists.
6. Your rights
Under the UK General Data Protection Regulation (UK GDPR) and the Data Protection Act 2018 you have the right to access your personal data, correct it, delete it, restrict or object to its use, and to data portability, where they apply. To use them, contact [email protected]. You also have the right to complain to the UK Information Commissioner's Office (ico.org.uk).
7. Cookies and similar technologies
See our Cookie Policy.
8. Children
The Service is not directed at children under 13 and we do not knowingly collect their personal data.
9. Security
We use sensible measures such as HTTPS, hashed passwords, access controls and request limits. No online service is completely secure.
10. Changes
We may update this policy. The date at the top shows when it last changed.
